The Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America list is not like other legal awards. Lawdragon, a legal publication, refers to it as “the most elite distinction in the profession.” While the institutions behind other awards and honors might disagree, we cannot argue with the elite label: The annual list consists of only 500 lawyers, including those serving as judges, in-house counsel, defense attorneys, and plaintiff’s attorneys. Unlike other awards, there is no categorization that allows the inclusion of a certain number of lawyers per practice area. Every lawyer is on the same playing field.

Why Lawdragon Matters to Us
Many legal awards, when you research them, tout their dependability due to multi-step evaluation processes that cover so many specific markers of “legal excellence.” This is not how Lawdragon operates—because these markers alone are not enough to identify the types of lawyers the publication honors.
Measuring the size of an attorney’s settlements or whether they have worked for big-name clients might signal career success, but it tells nothing about the substance of the work a lawyer does. They may spend their days defending Facebook against claims of violating users’ privacy or win big for a client who is seeking to undermine the free press. While this work may make an impressive resume, it does not use the legal system to bring justice to everyday Americans.
Releasing the 2021 Lawdragon 500 list, the publication wrote,
