BMW Recalls Over 1 Million Cars and SUVs Due to Engine Fire Risk

The German automaker BMW has announced a recall of some 1.4 million cars and SUVs, citing a risk of engine fire even when the vehicle is not in use. A spokesperson said the risk is low, but recommended parking the vehicles outside until repairs are made. Repairs are expected to be available beginning Dec. 18.

There are two separate recalls involved, and some vehicles may be affected by both.

The first recall affects about 740,000 vehicles with 6-cylinder engines sold in the U.S., along with around 80,000 sold in Canada. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has posted documents showing that a heater for the positive crankcase ventilation valve can overheat. This overheating can cause the valve to melt. This creates a risk for fire even without the engine being turned on. No injuries have reported as yet.

A spokesperson for BMW said the heater was intended to keep the valve from freezing in frigid temperatures. A manufacturing defect can allow corrosion, which can lead to overheating. Dealerships will correct the issue by replacing the heater.

Models affected by this recall include these vehicles from the 2007-2011 model years:

  • 328i
  • 328xi
  • 328i xDrive
  • 525i
  • 525xi
  • 528i
  • 528xi
  • 530i, 530xi
  • X3 3.0si
  • X3 xDrive30i
  • X5 xDrive30i
  • Z4 3.0i
  • Z4 3.0si
  • Z4 sDrive30i

The recall also affects the 128i from model years 2008 to 2011.

The second recall involves another risk of fire even in vehicles that are not in use. Wiring in the heating and AC systems can overheat, causing certain connectors to melt. This creates a small risk of fire. Also, a wiring connection can corrode, causing fires in rare instances. Four drivers reported being injured by the defect. To repair the defect, dealers will replace the connectors and wiring.

About 673,000 cars and SUVs sold in the U.S. are included in this recall. BMW is still reviewing whether the wiring defect affected cars sold in Canada. Models affected include these from the model years 2006-2011:

  • 323i
  • 325i
  • 325xi
  • 328i
  • 328xi
  • 330i
  • 330xi
  • 335i
  • 335xi
  • M3

These vehicles from other model years are also involved:

  • 328i xDrive (2007-2011)
  • 335i xDrive and 335is (2007-2011)
  • 335d (2009-2011)

If your vehicle is included in either recall, you should contact your dealer immediately and make an appointment for a free repair. In the meantime, protect yourself and your property by parking the vehicle outdoors.

If you are injured due to these or any vehicle defects, you may have a legitimate product liability claim. To hold the manufacturer accountable, contact an attorney familiar with product defect law.
